Natural terracotta, sand and earth aren’t just warm colours, they also add an exciting finish to a modern design. They create a home-baked purity, and give sleek shapes and matte surfaces a wholesome feel.
Getting back down to earth seems only natural after the recent trend for plants and greenery. We’ve begun to bring nature into our homes, to see being rooted and grounded as an advantage, and so there’s been a whole different colour palette entering our lives and interiors. These are perhaps best described as ‘earthy shades’. The colours range from dark magma red, deep orange and burnt terracotta – bold hues which glow from deep inside – to more tentative earthy sand, mocha and greige shades – still on the sunny side of the colour wheel.

Terracotta revives grey
From amber to baked earth, we love it when big items like furniture and rugs wear these mineral hues. They can bring a homely feel: the perfect counterpart to a white, grey or concrete wall. Confident terracotta is perfect when paired with timid greige: it sets the tone, yet is never too loud.
A homely touch for modern architecture
Earthy shades have been largely overlooked as an accent colour for our living areas, yet they can have a unique effect, as seen in the interior design of Sella Concept: The rose-coloured walls bring subtle warth to the natural rock furnishings of the London restaurant Omar’s Place, where Mediterrenean flavours meet avantgarde cuisine. Also in London, one can visit the new Aesop store, designed by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta. Terracotta arches soar above a large circular demonstration sink made from stainless steel and concrete, adding a friendly embrace to this futuristic design.
