Design in Frankfurt: Three tips from the Ambiente blog team.

Frankfurt is not only a trade fair city, but also a hotspot for design, architecture and culture – and not just since its designation as World Design Capital 2026. The city shows in numerous places how diverse and exciting design can be – from applied art and curated furnishing concepts to historical architecture.

Museum Angewandte Kunst – Dieter Rams and more

The Museum Angewandte Kunst, one of Frankfurt’s most renowned exhibition venues, is located on Schaumainkai, Frankfurt’s museum embankment. The light-flooded building designed by architect Richard Meier provides the perfect setting for design, arts and crafts, fashion and everyday culture.

In addition to changing special exhibitions, the museum is also dedicated to important design classics – such as in the permanent exhibition Dieter Rams. A style room. Rams, one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century, was head designer at Braun for many years and shaped the aesthetics of household appliances worldwide with his clear forms and minimalist designs. Icons such as the Braun SK 4 record player (“Snow White’s coffin”) and the Braun T3 transistor radio can be seen in the museum. However, a visit not only offers a look back at important design classics, but also new perspectives on current issues of design and functionality.

New Old Town: Architecture and history reinterpreted

The New Old Town between the cathedral and the Römer is one of the most impressive examples of successful urban development in Frankfurt. Historic half-timbered houses have been reconstructed here and harmoniously complemented by modern architecture.

Particularly worth seeing is the Haus zur Goldenen Waage, a once splendid half-timbered house that has been faithfully restored and today provides an insight into the residential culture of the time. Small boutiques, craft shops and cafés such as Hoppenworth & Ploch complete the colourful picture of the New Old Town and offer opportunities to stroll and enjoy. Just a few steps away is the Römer, the historic town hall and one of Frankfurt’s most famous landmarks.
